Here it is, 2013. The haze of the holidays are behind us, end of year reports are almost done, and you may even have some of your planning done for the new year. In fact, it’s a great time to take a look at your website to make sure it’s running right, getting found, and most importantly, getting you new business. Our solution? The Website Review Checklist.
I find there are a few groups of people out there when it comes to websites.
High end users are those that are constantly looking at their site; often their website is a huge part of their business, like an e-commerce site or it generates most of their sales leads. Then you have the Active Users, people that understand the power of an interactive website that needs regular attention, is central to the business, but not the most important tool. Lastly you have the Hands Off User. This is a business owner that sets up a website and does not update or market it, and might even go years without doing something to it. Whichever you are, our Website Review Checklist is designed to make it easy for you to evaluate your website and get the most from it.
Evaluating your website regularly is crucial.
Things change during the year; that employee you replaced 6 months ago is still on your staff page, your coupon expired in September and the site has become the equivalent of a dusty old attic. Visitors to your website know it, search engines know it, YOU know it. A stale website gives people the impression you aren’t serious about your business, or worse, that you may not even be in business anymore. Search engines can tell and your search engine rankings will start to slip as a result.
Consistent internet marketing is also a must. Gone are the days when you could do some on page optimization, build a few links, and submit your site once again to Google. Competition is stiffer, so they are spending time every month marketing their sites instead of just “as needed.”
Do a quick search on your main keyword, then compare your site to your competitors. Who’s site is more up to date? Are you feeling a little embarrassed? If so, its time to clean up your website up and turn it into a lean, mean marketing machine for the new year.
Introducing the Website Review Checklist.
I recommend a website review every 3 to 6 months, or every year at a minimum. We’ve broken the website review checklist into 4 parts:
- Website Maintenance
- Internet Marketing
- Suggestions for getting more from your website
Design covers not just the look, but the formatting of the website as well. For instance, is your site skinny on a large screen? Can you view it on mobile devices? Is the navigation clunky, or can it be simplified? Making the site easy to view and navigate is crucial.
Website Maintenance is a blending of technical details and content. If your site is broken in any way, then that’s just a waste of what could be a great marketing tool for you. And where can you go if you need a copy of the site? Better have that backup handy. Is your content up to date? I know all these seem simple, but they are credibility killers if you aren’t paying attention.
Internet Marketing is necessary to generate new business, but how are you doing? Taking a look at your traffic statistics can tell you a LOT about how you are or aren’t doing. Looking at your search engine rankings can tell you if you’ve fallen behind, and if you need to get those rankings up to generate the amount of business you want.
Suggestions are included at the end to help you keep that website humming and generating new leads. Remember this – a well tuned machine will keep humming and last you a long time. Why should your website be any different?
